Why stay here

For runners, support crews and TMB hikers.

Les Contamines-Montjoie holds a special place on the world's trail map. A classic stage of the Tour du Mont-Blanc, a checkpoint on the UTMB®, and one of the better recovery bases for runners of the sister races. The village is small, calm, south-facing, sitting at 1,164 m — an environment that helps both performance and recovery.

The studio sits in the Hameau du Lay, set back from the village centre — quieter at night, but just 90 seconds on foot from the first bakery and small supermarket. The official Tour du Mont-Blanc trail passes by within minutes. For a runner or a TMB hiker, the location is rare: athletic and silent at the same time.

UTMB® in Les Contamines

The village is a key checkpoint on the course.

On the UTMB® course, Les Contamines comes after Saint-Gervais and Notre-Dame-de-la-Gorge, just before the climb to the Col du Bonhomme. It is usually the first major aid station for runners starting from Chamonix. The village square becomes a technical hub through the long race nights.

Routes for the sister races — CCC, TDS, OCC, MCC, ETC, PTL — pass through Les Contamines depending on the year's official routings. The station also serves as a transition point for several of them. Always refer to the current year's official routes on the UTMB® website for the latest information.

Tour du Mont-Blanc · TMB

A classic stage on the clockwise route.

The Tour du Mont-Blanc is one of Europe's most iconic long-distance treks — roughly 170 km in 7 to 12 days around the Mont-Blanc massif, crossing France, Italy and Switzerland. Les Contamines is a classic stage, typically the second day for hikers walking clockwise from Chamonix.

The studio offers a real alternative to refuges and gîtes for TMB hikers: a proper bed, your own kitchen, a washing machine for your kit, a private bathroom. It's a stage of genuine comfort within a long trek — particularly valued by hikers walking independently, couples, or families who'd rather skip the dormitory experience.

Booking in TMB high season

The TMB season runs primarily from late June to mid-September, peaking in July and August. For nights within this window, we recommend booking 3 to 6 months in advance, especially for weekends.

« Antoine is an incredibly thoughtful and responsive host. The apartment is warm and beautifully renovated — you feel at home immediately. Premium quality at a price that surprised me compared to lesser offers nearby. » Benoit · ★ 5/5 · Verified Airbnb review

Your questions

Planning your UTMB or TMB trip.

Is Les Contamines-Montjoie on the UTMB course?
Yes. Les Contamines-Montjoie is one of the main checkpoints of the UTMB®, situated around kilometre 31 (after Saint-Gervais and Notre-Dame-de-la-Gorge). An official aid station is typically set up in the village square. Les Contamines is also a base camp for several of the sister races (CCC, TDS, OCC) depending on the year's routes.
Is the studio on the official Tour du Mont-Blanc route?
Yes. Les Contamines-Montjoie is a classic stage on the Tour du Mont-Blanc, usually day two for hikers walking clockwise from Chamonix. The trail passes within minutes of the Hameau du Lay and then climbs up to the Col du Bonhomme.
How far is Chamonix?
Chamonix is about 40 minutes by car from Les Contamines (35 km via Saint-Gervais). During UTMB® week expect longer travel times due to road closures around the race. The village has free public parking for runners who get dropped off or use shuttles.
When should I book for UTMB week?
As early as possible — ideally as soon as UTMB® race entries are confirmed, typically in November or December for the following year's race. Quality accommodation along the course books out 9 to 12 months in advance for the race week (late August / early September).
Is the studio suitable for a runner's recovery?
Yes. The Hameau du Lay is set apart from the village centre — quieter at night than central guesthouses. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen fully equipped for pre-race carb loading and post-race meals, and there's a washing machine for kit. The Bon Nant river is two hundred metres away for cold-water leg recovery.
Can the studio host a runner and their crew?
Yes. The studio sleeps up to 4 adults or 2 adults and 3 children. It's ideal for a runner with family or a small support crew. Self check-in 24/7 via a key safe is invaluable when your runner arrives at odd hours.
